I was visiting a friend of mine who works for a local CBS station..and he showed me footage of Dan Rather in Afghanistan in the early 80's..and Rather and his crew shot super-8 on all the stories he did..they snuck the camera's in..it's hard to tell what stock they used..but it was neat to see the footage..super-8 history..on a national news level.

Actually, ABC (or CBS?) also did an expose on human rights conditions and political issues in Africa back in the late 70s. They used super 8 cameras shooting 90% out in bright daylight on K40. The reason they chose super 8 was to get past government officials that didn't want broadcast journalists doing stories of this nature on national tv. The inspectors checking baggage and things coming into the country just assumed the super 8 stuff was home movie equipment. The footage was later transferred to 2 inch video and finished up electronically. I remember seeing it and it looked pretty good, considering they used a Kodak VP1 for the transfer.

I'd like to know what cameras they were using on those old news shots.

Matt,
My friend told me they used canon 1014-XLS..on the Dan Rather trip..and sound film...but he didn't remember what stock..my guess is K-40..it was rank transfered..it looked great..even the night shots.
